Reflections on the development of our ideas about diapers and bedwetting

It seems that most of our ideas on issues such as continence the intestine and bedwetting decreased from our parents. Some parents have a more relaxed these issues while others are more stringent. It is also for pediatricians and other health professionals. For example, I saw an ad several years ago by a doctor famous (I think it was T. Berry Brazleton) said in substance, in terms of potty training parents should let nature take its course and continue to reduce the natural growth process, when the child is ready, so parents should start a training regimen.

There are differences of opinion about when a child is ready to learn to use the restroom. The psychologist John Rosemond disagree with what called child-centered approach adopted by Dr. Brazleton and believes that children should be layers as soon as possible. According to the site www.dy-dee.com Rosemond believes it is "a slap to the intelligence of a human being should be allowed to pursue a dirt baby and wetting himself past age 2. "

An article from the Mayo Clinic indicates that many children who are interested to potty training at 2 years, but some show no interest until 2 ½ years or more. As should be omitted parameters reasonable established for these situations to eliminate physical or cognitive problems, but we must also take into account the fact that groups of people develop at different rates. In addition, some people have physical or cognitive reasons for delay in this area. The reason for mentioning the attitudes of people over control of bladder or bowel is that many people extrapolate their ideas in this area on bedwetting and diaper. I n my opinion, this extrapolation is not justified.

For some reason, our notions about potty training and when our children should reach dry at night have been linked, we believe that if the child is "mature" enough to use the toilet should be mature enough to be able to sleep through the night without get wet. It follows that if there is enough not to need diapers because they have learned to use the bathroom, must be sufficiently mature not need diapers at night. But we must realize that there is no necessary correlation between the time a child can go to the bathroom bath and its ability to stay dry overnight. Some children may be perhaps the toilet at an early age and not reach the night dry for many years (in some cases, there is never a lot of adults who wet their beds and still have this problem all his life.) capacity physical and mental variety sometimes develop at different rates.

Continence and designs of the people of maturity were inextricably linked in the minds of many people over a long period. I firmly believe it is time to rethink this. Is this may have components physical or cognitive (or both) that may be responsible for a person who is delayed in their ability to achieve continence, including problems with bedwetting. The fact that they have these problems and may need diapers for their management is not a reflection on their "maturity". People have been suffering various parts of your body, your heart, liver, eyes, ears, etc. and use all necessary means to correct or control the problem Why should it be different with a problem like bedwetting?

The parents tell the child of a large quantity "child" who does not wear a coat over. I realize that parents have good intentions with this approach, because children are motivated to act and behave more like adults and parents and other relatives of the child believes that this method will help in this regard. I can also understand why Children are proud of all movements and achieving physical or cognitive closest to adulthood and independence, such as tying his shoes, learn swimming products such as "water wings", to be able to take the training wheels of the bicycle, etc. These are examples of things that show the ability of a child and his ability to learn a new skill for the child is a great source of pride. However, the fact that a child must wear diapers for bedwetting has nothing to do in this regard. Such a situation is the only person who has the ability to control bodily functions. A person may be the most intelligent, experienced and competent in the world still lack the ability to stay dry during the night for some reason.

People who read this article might conclude that I believe that nobody should use layers for their bedwetting because of the importance of these products. Nothing could be further from the truth. As mentioned above, I do not think people should rely on diapers and do not seek treatments for their enuresis. It is very important for a person to see a doctor exclude potential serious condition. However, if after seeing a doctor and serious conditions are ruled out, if all avenues for treating enuresis night are not the parents should consider other options for changing diapers, and pin the diapers covered with plastic tape or disposable diapers. While that might lead to the child or adolescent to adjust some layers, I think in the long term is best for the child, after all, is unhealthy and unsafe (not to mention uncomfortable) works all night in wet sheets and clothing.

About the Author

I am a psychology major who writes about the stigma surrounding using diapers to manage nocturnal enuresis(the clinical term for bed-wetting) in older children, adolescents, and teenagers. The purpose of writing my articles is twofold-1.) to help people become more aware of the different diapering options out there for bed-wetters and 2.) to help older children and teens feel less embarrassed about wearing diapers to bed.
