I would like to dye my soon to be baby boys cloth Diapers blue, I can’t get over how much more it costs to buy them already dyed. Anyhow I will be using the dyed diapers as burp cloths not as diapers (using Fuzzi Bunz for that). Serious answers only please… Thanks!
If you choose the right dye, you can get any color you like with NO bleeding or fading of color. If you choose the wrong dye, it will crock and bleed forever, which will make it more trouble than it’s worth, and you always have to worry that loose dye will cause a rash or something for the baby.
The wrong type of dye to use is an “all-purpose” dye such as Rit. Sure, you can buy it almost anywhere, even the grocery store, but it will not bond firmly to the fiber in your fabric, so it is never really permanent.
The right type of dye is called fiber reactive dye. You can buy it at any crafts store, or you can mail-order it; if you mail-order from a good dye supplier, the dyes cost much less per garment and come in a hundred different colors. At the crafts store, look for any good tie-dye kit, such as the ones made by Jacquard, Tulip, Rainbow Rock, or Dylon (avoid the Rit tie-dye kit and the Magic Strings tie-dye kit), or look for Dylon Permanent Dye, Tulip One Step Fashion Dye, or Procion MX dye. For mail-order, see the link below for sources of dyeing supplies.
Fiber reactive dye, such as Procion MX dye, bonds permanently to the cotton in your diapers. Just follow the instructions, and leave the dye to sit with the soda ash overnight. The next day, wash once in cool water, to remove the soda ash, then wash twice in hot hot water to remove any excess unattached dye. After you have completed this washing out step, the remaining dye will not rub off or wash off. You can throw it in the laundry in hot with whites and have no color transfer at all. You don’t have to sort your laundry at all, if it’s all dyed with these high quality dyes! And because the dye does not come loose from the fabric, you do not have to worry about whether or not the loose dye is safe for your baby. Properly applied fiber reactive dye is the safest of all dyes for cotton fabric that will be used with babies.
