Choosing Cloth Diapers, Help?!?
Hiya!! I’m thinking of buying some Flip and BumGenius. The Flip system comes with 2 covers and 6 inserts and the BumGenius comes with both a regular and newborn insert with each cover. I just have a few questions, answer all that you know.
1. Do you think 6 covers, 18 inserts, and 6 BumGenius would be enough?
2. Do the BumGenius pocket covers need to be washed after every change or just the poops?
3. Are the inserts interchangeable?
4. Can I use other inserts besides the ones provided (prefolds, hemp, ect)?
5. Any other tips for newbies?
1. I would pick up a few more, closer to 15 in total. You can go up to this much in a day! I had 25 and found that was a great amount. You can always pick up more after you have your child and find the diapers are working well for you.
2. The whole thing needs to be washed. You could try pulling out a pee-filled liner, but the cover will be wet when you go to put in the next liner. It’s better for baby’s skin to replace the whole thing with every change.
3. I don’t know, I just have the BumGeniuses – sorry!
4. I would think you could – as long as you wash all with the proper detergent for them all. If they fit, they should work.
5. Pick up some liners that go between the diaper and the baby to catch the poo. This REALLY helps with clean ups, and they are flushable. I use Bummi liners – they come in a roll of 200.
If you find that the diapers slightly stain or smell, hang them out in the sun for a day and you’ll find they come out looking new.
I pre-stuff them after washing so they’re ready to go when using. I also hang the shells/covers to dry, as it helps keeping them looking good for longer instead of throwing them in the dyer.
If you don’t wash them right away – they will survive. I admit that I’ve left them up for a week and they still all came out clean – I just had to run them twice through the washing machine. To wash – pull the liner out of the cover for better results.
I use wonderwash detergent and it’s lasted a long time and not hindered the absorption of the liners.
